Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions didn’t the message they were supposed to roll over and play dead for Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
The Lions lead the Saints 14-10 at halftime at the Super Dome.
Stafford passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, out-gunning this year’s likely MVP.
Calvin Johnson caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Brees was 17-of-21 for 174 yards for New Orleans, but was unable to punch the ball into the end zone late in the half when the Saints were handed a golden opportunity inside the 10-yard line thanks to a personal foul penalty. They had to settle for a 24-yard John Kasay field goal.
Darren Sproles scored the Saints’ only touchdown of the half on a two-yard scamper in the second quarter.
Could Sean Payton’s team be facing an early playoff exit at the hands of an underdog for the second time in as many seasons? Remember the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks and Marshawn Lynch?
