Redskins Sign Billy Cundiff, Release Graham Gano

What a difference 24 hours can make. One day after presumably winning the kicking battle, Graham Gano was released in favor of Billy Cundiff.

One day after winning the kicking battle in Washington, Graham Gano has been released by the Redskins in favor of former Pro Bowl kicker Billy Cundiff.

Washington released Gano Tuesday morning after signing the recently ousted Baltimore Ravens kicker.

Just 24 hours earlier the team released Neil Rackers, presumably giving the incumbent his third full season as the Redskins kicker.

In 2011, Gano connected on 31 of 41 field goal attempts. Of the 10 misses, five were blocked kicks. The 25-year-old also tied the franchise record with a 59-yard field goal.

Cundiff signed a lucrative five-year, $15 million contract with the Ravens heading into last season. However, his 2011 campaign will be best known for a missed 32-yard field goal that would have tied the AFC Championship in the final minute against the New England Patriots.

He lost a preseason kicking battle with rookie Justin Tucker and was released Sunday.

Cundiff’s career also includes stops with the Dallas Cowboys (2002-05), New Orleans Saints (2006) and Cleveland Browns (2009).

Career Stats

Graham Gano: 59-for-80 FG / 73.8 pct. / 6 Blocks / 59-for-61 PAT

Billy Cundiff: 132-for-172 FG / 76.7 pct. / 1 Block / 200-for-201 PAT
