Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather, who was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles, says he did not return as a precautionary measure.
Meriweather went down with a non-contact injury to his right knee and was able to gingerly walk off the field after being down for some time. His teammates took a knee by his side as he lay on the field.
The injury was later diagnosed as a right knee sprain.
“It was more me thinking about the future than me going back in there when we were already up by so much,” said Meriweather.
Sunday marked his regular season debut with the Redskins after having been out of the lineup for the first nine games of the year with a troublesome left knee.
Meriweather, whose efforts were applauded my head coach Mike Shanahan after the game, intercepted Philadelphia Eagles rookie Nick Foles in the first quarter as a struggling Redskins secondary came to life.
“I don’t think it was me,” he said of the secondary’s performance. “I actually think the fact that all four starters were actually together for the first time just brought and upbeat to our defense. We realized that everything falls on us, so we played like it.”
