At first Kevin Barnes thought he had been released by the Washington Redskins. As it turns out, he instead was traded to the Detroit Lions.

Barnes was initially informed he had been released, but the Redskins were able to work out a deal before Monday’s 4 p.m. cut deadline. Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Barnes spent the past three seasons in Washington where he appeared in 29 games with three starts.

Last season he recorded two interceptions and had a combined 26 tackles, primarily as a backup.

Washington selected Barnes in the third-round of the 2009 draft out of Maryland.

The team also released veteran kicker Neil Rackers on Monday.
