WASHINGTON (FNN Media) — John Beck wants to be the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins again.
After losing out to Rex Grossman in training camp, Beck was inserted as the team’s starter mid-way through the season to try to jump start an offense that had stopped producing.
With Beck at the helm and Rex Grossman sidelined, the Redskins offense went from lethargic to non-existent.
“When we took Rex out those three games, we stopped moving the ball, we stopped making plays,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan told ESPN 980 recently.
Shanahan was stating the obvious and not even Beck can take exception to the truth, even if it’s not exactly how he remembers it.
But, despite the poor showing, Beck’s confidence is intact and he’s ready to take over the team once again.
“I feel without a doubt I can be a better quarterback,” Beck said recently on the Gordon Monson Radio Show, per Hogs Haven. “I told our coaches this at the end of the season. . . I went into Coach Shanahan’s office and said, ‘I want to play right now.’ This is very frustrating for me to have had my opportunity, to make the most of it when he put me in, I made the most of it, but the games following it didn’t go the way we wanted. It’s tough for me to say now I’m not playing. I’m like ‘Coach, I want to play because having that experience I know I can play better.’
“And he said, ‘I know you can too, but right now we’re in this situation. There will be another opportunity down the road and you just got to make sure you’re ready for it.’ ”
The question is whether Beck will get that opportunity in Washington.
Among free agents, the Redskins have been rumored to be in the Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn and Kyle Orton sweepstakes.
At the moment obtaining a quarterback through the draft seems far fetched.
And then there is Grossman who is a free agent and could find his way back to Ashburn next season.
Literally anything can happen with the Redskins at quarterback this offseason. The only thing that would come as a complete surprise is more reports of Beck being the projected starter heading into the season.
