A report suggest Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain purchased a firearm Thursday prior to the shots being fired at his car later that evening.

According to WAFF-TV, McClain made the purchase at Academy Sports in Decatur, Ala.

Attempts to confirm the report proved unsuccessful. The local store referred our inquiry to the corporate office who refused to comment based on the ongoing police investigation and customer privacy concerns.

It is unclear whether McClain’s alleged purchase is connected with the shooting of his Chevy Tahoe Thursday evening.

Police were called to the area of Second Street S.W. and Memorial Drive in Decatur Thursday at 6:36 p.m. for reports of a person possibly being shot. They attempted to locate a victim, but were unsuccessful.

A sort time later, at 6:56 p.m., McClain phoned police to report that the vehicle he was driving had been shot at by a group of people standing on the corner of Second Street S.W and 8th Avenue.

The bullet did not penetrate the passenger compartment and neither the McClain, who was driving, nor his passengers were struck by the bullet. Police were able to retrieve the bullet from the vehicle.

Police have not made an arrest in the case and are asking anyone with information to call 256-341-4660. Persons with information can remain anonymous.
