Plaxico Burress

The Oakland Raiders receiving corps would benefit from a veteran presence. There’s no doubt about it. The speedy squad Jason Campbell has as targets now are still relatively young and has the potential to thrive from somebody who has “been there and done that.”

Perhaps that somebody is Plaxico Burress.

While the notion of signing a 34-year-old player who has been out of the game for two seasons while serving a prison term for essentially shooting himself in the leg may seem crazy to some, in reality it could be just the thing the Raiders need.

Take a look at what Michael Vick was able to accomplish with the Philadelphia Eagles after his release from prison. He is undeniably playing the best football of his career.

Why couldn’t the same go for Burress? Campbell is likely familiar with him from their time together in the NFC East which could shorten their learning curve on timing.

Moreover, Burress hasn’t played in two season. That may be a benefit once he shakes off the initial rust. His legs and body will be fresh.

He’ll also likely be available at a decent price… not that money has mattered to Al Davis this offseason.

Burress will be released from prison on June 6 after he will have served 21 months of an original two-year sentence. He is being released early for good behavior.
