First the Whalers and now this.
The news continues to be grim for the UFL. The primary rival to the NFL announced it was consolidating to a four-team format and ceasing operations of the Hartford Colonials.
Players on the Colonials roster will be able to join the remaining teams in the league though an allocation draft on Monday, Aug. 15.
Hartford head coach Jerry Glanville will become a consultant to the league.
UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue issued a brief statement Wednesday.
“We are moving forward as projected having revised our strategy and realigned the make up of the United Football League. We are disappointed to have suspended operations in Hartford and are grateful to the Colonials fans for their support. We have not closed the door on Hartford and will review the viability of returning to the city at the end of this season.
“We hope that football fans in Omaha and Sacramento are excited to learn that their teams are hosting the first games of the new season and look forward to a great atmosphere in those venues when the games kick off next month.
“The September 15 start date will allow teams to retrieve players who are in NFL camps, but do not make final rosters. Our shorter season will allow players to pursue their dream of making an impact in the NFL by joining teams earlier in the process once the UFL season has concluded.”
The revised schedule will be released next week.
UFL training camps will open Aug. 22 with the season kickoff on Sept. 15.
