If John Elway was in charge of player personnel for the Denver Broncos prior to the 2009 season, Jay Cutler might still be a member of the Denver Broncos.
Cutler was traded by the Broncos to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and a few draft picks. The trade was largely orchestrated by former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels when he and Cutler couldn’t seem to find a way to co-exist on the same team.
When asked if he would have traded Cutler, Elway, now the Bronco’s executive vice president, told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, “That’s hard to say because I don’t know all the circumstances.
“But I do know how hard it is to get a guy who has that much talent at the position.”
Cutler went on to lead the Bears to an NFC North title and an appearance in the NFC title game in 2010. McDaniels was fired by Broncos, but not before he urged the Broncos to select University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft as Cutler’s eventual replacement.
John Elway Insists He May Have Kept Cutler

Aaron. Bravo. Stole my thunder completely but stated it much better
Insists? Do you know the meaning of the word?
I don’t think you can insist you MAY or might have done anything. “I demand you think about posting this comment!” isn’t much of a demand. Catch my drift?
Cutler went on to lead the team to the NFC championship game? Really? Pretty sure his first year he led in interceptions and year two concussions. Peppers led that team.
Orton was his replacement, not Tebow. Tebow is Orton’s replacement but Orton has done a great job replacing Cutler.
