49ers’ rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick says he’s being cleared to engage in various team activities, following a surgical procedure he had done on his lower left leg shortly after the draft.

Kaepernick spoke with Eric Branch of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat after practice Thursday, and said he was healthy enough to jump in with quarterbacks Alex Smith and David Carr during the practice.

“Last week I didn’t want to hop in just for the simple fact of timing,” Kaepernick said. “You want to be on time when you start doing stuff like that. So that’s something I’m working back into and just trying to get comfortable with.”

Kaepernick is running again. He told Branch he went on a two-mile run at Stanford Hospital, as part of his rehab, but hasn’t been cleared to be part of any “high-impact” activities, like jumping.

Kaepernick admitted to Branch some frustration with the precautions his doctors are taking, but he understands why they’re not rushing him back.

“At this point I’m kind of anxious for the doctors to kind of cut me loose and say go ahead,” Kaepernick said. “That’s what I mean when I say I’m kind of on their time. They’re just trying to take every precaution. I feel like I might be able to do more than what they think.”
