Now that Washington has gotten through the preseaon, it’s time to get ready for the games that really count. Arizona is slowly in the airplane rear-view mirror (as we speak, the team is flying home) and we can officially say we’re in the “regular season.” For the Washington Redskins and Redskins Nation, that means the Dallas Cowboys and “Dallas Week”.
The Skins host the Cowboys here at FedExField on September 12th and with the optimism surrounding this team this year, the week leading up to the BIG game is going to be BIG.
As I read the announcement from the Redskins about the plans they have set up for the week prior to the Dallas game, I couldn’t help but get fired up about it myself. The team has outdone itself… it has totally outdone itself this year.
Beginning Tuesday, September 7, the official “2010 KICKOFF WEEK” begins and Dan Snyder, Bruce Allen and the Washington Redskins have planned an entire week of events to lead off to the big game, which of course, will be nationally televised on Sunday night, September 12 at 8:00 pm. Wait till you see this:
- Tuesday, September 7 – The Redskins “2010 KICKOFF WEEK” be launched via OFFICIAL PROCLAMATIONS in D.C., Maryland and Virginia by city and county executives. D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, P.G. County Executive Jack Johnson and Loudoun County Chairman Scott York will hold separate press conferences to announce the official proclamations to their regions. AND, each will issue a friendly wager on the outcome of the game with their counterparts in Texas.
- Wednesday, September 8 – Morton’s, The Steakhouse down in Washington D.C. is hosting the “OFFICIAL DAY-LONG ‘BEAT DALLAS’ PARTY at their D.C. location. Dexter Manley will be there and give fans the opportunity to celebrate the rivalry. ESPN 980 will broadcast from the party from noon to 7:00 pm and there will be opportunities for fans to win party deck passes to Sunday night’s game. Also on Wednesday, General Manager Bruce Allen will host a “RETURN TO GLORY” party at Union Jack’s in Ballston Commons Mall from 7:00pm to 11:pm
- Thursday, September 9 – “HONK IF YOU HATE DALLAS” day. Redskins celebrities, Hogettes and some of the Hooters girls will be strategically placed throughout the D.C. area encouraging commuters to show their loyalty by honking when they see signs placed at intersections and major thoroughfares. Let’s make the metropolitan area very noisy that day.
- Friday, September 10 – as part of the league-wide “BACK TO FOOTBALL FRIDAY” the Redskins encourage Redskins fans to wear burgundy and gold all day. As part of this day:
- Area schools are competing for a chance to win $10,000 for the best decorated and Redskins spirited classrooms. They can enter via www.nfl.com/backtofootball.
- The Washington Redskins cheerleaders will appear live on NBC’s “The Today Show” in New York City where they will pass out “Beat Dallas’ t-shirts to the crowd.
- Redskins owner Dan Snyder will visit Heritage Hight School in Loudoun County at 3:30 and attend the school’s football pep rally.
- Finally, Snyder will perform the coin toss for the High Point High School’s home football opener against Flowers High School. High Point plays on one of the fields that was refurbished by the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation’s “Field for Tomorrow” project.
- Saturday, September 11 – all Redskins fans are invited to Redskins Park to help send the players off following the morning practice. There will be competitions for BEST DRESSED Redskins fan and the BEST DECORATED vehicle, along with other opportunities to win tickets to Sunday’s game. Redskins fans are also encouraged to follow Redskins Blogger Matt Terl on Twitter (@RedskinsBlog) as he will be driving around the D.C. Metropolitan area and Tweeting where fans can meet him for free tickets to the game.
- Saturday night, Redskins alumni and team officials will be on hand at FedExField to help debut the new flatbed-mounted giant screens that will be in the parking lots Sunday to allow fans to watch the early NFL games while they tailgate for the Redskins vs. Cowboys matchup.
- Sunday, September 12 – GAMEDAY!!!
- For the first time ever, the parking lots at FedExField will open at noon for the 8:00 p.m. game.
- Five giant videoboards will be spread throughout the Stadium’s parking lots and Bud Light Pavilion for tailgating fans to watch the afternoon NFL games.
- In addition to the videoboards, the Redskins Marching Band and cheerleaders will be performing in the tailgate areas during the afternoon along with Redskins Alumni who will be on hand to meet the fans.
- The FedExField Bud Light Pavilion will open early at 4:00 p.m., at which time the team will, for the very first time, open the lower bowl in the east end of the Stadium for fans who want to come in and watch the late afternoon game on the Stadiums’s new 100-foot HD Videoboards.
I’ve said it before – it’s a great time to be a Redskins fan.
