Stafon Johnson nearly died five months ago while lifting weights at USC. Now, he has his sites set on the the NFL Scouting Combine next week and eventually a roster spot playing on Sundays.
In a detailing article on Yahoo! Sports, Jason Cole profiled the running back’s battle back from his near-death experience.
He notes that Johnson has worked hard to get his strength back after undergoing life saving surgery and can now bench press 225 pounds 23 to 27 times.
That’s important and impressive for a running back. It could ultimately improve his draft position come April.
As for critics who said he wouldn’t be able to come back from the injury, “I’m in the business of proving people wrong,” Johnson said. “I always have been.”
The USC running back has been training with the Performance Gaines training center in Los Angeles.
