Texans Sign A Running Back

Ben TateThe Houston Texans have reportedly signed seventh year veteran running back Derrick Ward. The signing was most likely in response to the recent outbreak of injuries that affilicted the Texan’s running back corps.

Rookie Ben Tate was lost for the season due to a severe ankle injury that he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals. The Texans leading rusher of 2008, Steve Slaton is suffering from a toe injury commonly called “turf toe.” Jeremiah Johnson ended the 2009 season on injured reserve and is once again battling injury. Like Slaton, Johnson is recovering from a toe injury.

Derrick Ward gained 1,025 yards and averaged nearly six yards per carry in 2008 as a member of the formidable New York Giants backfield. He signed with the Buccaneers the following season, but failed to live up to their expectations.

Ward is expected to back up undrafted rookie Arian Foster for the time being.
