The Houston Texans picked up the option on quarterback Matt Schaub’s contract that will keep him with the team through the 2012 season.

Schaub will become a much richer man in the offseason, as the option brings with it a $10 million roster bonus.

Texans owner Bob McNair made the announcement Sunday night as the team was eliminated from the playoffs, but was upbeat nonetheless.

“There’s no way that we’re not going to keep Matt,” McNair said. “He’s our quarterback, and the team has confidence in him.

“I think he’s really been one of the very best quarterbacks in the league this year. The fact that he’s led the league in total yardage speaks for itself.”

McNair also announced Sunday that Gary Kubiak “will definitely” be back as the team’s head coach next season.
