The Pittsburgh Steelers have two big goals for this off-season. First to sign head coach Mike Tomlin to a new contract. And second, to re-sign free agent nose tackle Casey Hampton.

Steelers president Art Rooney II was impressed with the way Tomlin was able to turn the team around after a five game losing streak mid-season. The defending Super Bowl Champions narrowly missed the playoffs after closing out the year with three consecutive wins.

“I think Mike’s going to be our coach for a long period of time,” Rooney II told Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “That’s certainly what we’re shooting for, and that’s his intention, so we’ll deal with it at the appropriate time.”

As for Hampton, he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 1, but there is a good chance the Steelers will apply their franchise tag to him.

If they do, the team will have to pay him a salary that is the average of the five highest-paid defensive linemen in the NFL according to Brown.

“That will be part of our offseason plan, figuring out the best way to do that and how to handle Casey,” Rooney II said. “We’ll get into others and make some decisions about what we can do contract-wise with various other players.”
