Stallworth To Work Out With Lions

Dante Stallworth

Donte’ Stallworth, wide receiver cut by the Cleveland Browns on Monday, is reported to have worked out today with the Detroit Lions.  Drew Rosenhaus, Stallworth’s agent, would not confirm nor deny the report when contacted on Tuesday evening.

A first-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2002, Stallworth was suspended for the entire 2009 season after pleading guilty to felony DUI manslaughter last year.

Stallworth was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Sunday, and Cleveland cut him on Monday.  “I think he recognizes what he did and the horrific nature and the unfortunate outcome and I think he’s prepared himself to get back in and play,” Goodell said Friday.  “So he will be reinstated after the Super Bowl on Sunday.”

Since being drafted by New Orleans and playing his first four seasons with the Saints, Stallworth has been a bit of a journeyman the past few seasons.  He played with the Browns in 2008, the Patriots in 2007, and the Eagles in 2006.  2005 was his best year as a pro when he caught 70 balls for 945 yards and seven touchdowns.

After using first-round draft picks on receivers in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007, the Lions are still in search of a reliable No. 2 receiver opposite Calvin Johnson.
