Shanahan Gets Through to Portis, Redskins Happy with Free Agency

Clinton Portis

During his his press conference as head coach of the Washington Redskins, Mike Shanahan insinuated that Clinton Portis would have to improve his off-season and practice habits or he may not have a spot on the team next season.

Now, it appears that Portis received that message loud and clear.

The team will hold their first voluntary conditioning program next week at Redskins Park and it looks like C.P. is coming.

“Oh, I guarantee you Clinton will be there,” Shanahan said Thursday night, per Jason Reid of the Washington Post. “I know Clinton too well. He’ll be there and kick-off the offseason on the right note. I want my leaders to be there, and hopefully we’ll have 100 percent participation. If not, I’ll be disappointed.”

Shanahan also commented on the team’s slow movement in the free agent field which has been picking up steam as of late.

“I’m very satisfied” with their plan, Shanahan told Reid. “We have a gameplan and it takes time. We’ve got a plan, it’s not going to happen overnight. We just have to watch the plan take place.

“But we’re going to try to get better every day. It’s a process. You’re not going to do it overnight, but you have to try to do the little things the right way. Hopefully, we can get it done.”
