Sam Bradford, the next Flacco and Sanchez or better?

For the past two seasons, the NFL experienced two outstanding quarterback rookie signal callers, the Baltimore Ravens’ Joe Flacco and the New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez. Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan can be threw into the mix as well, but he didn’t help lead his club to the conference championship game like Flacco and Sanchez.
The quarterbacks mentioned has set the bar high, so now let’s enter the era of St. Louis Rams’ rookie quarterback, Sam Bradford. Unlike the Flacco and Sanchez, Bradford doesn’t have the weapons and talent around him nor have a solid defense to help support him. Since wide receiver Donnie Avery out for the season because he injured his right knee in the preseason game against the New England Patriot, Bradford don’t have a go-to-man in the catching game, but he does have running back Steven Jackson.
If Bradford can lead the Rams to at least two wins this season, rookie of the year consideration should be given to him right away. The NFC West isn’t the strongest division in the NFL and is considered the weakest among the others, but if Bradford can muster up some victories, given the magic number of six, with the lack of talent around him compared to Flacco and Sanchez, would he be stamped as being better than them?
“Well, I don’t think that anybody in this situation, coming in as a rookie quarterback, is ready for everything,” said Rams’ head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who named Bradford as the starting quarterback for the team. “I’m sure that these defensive coordinators will fire things at him that we haven’t seen yet. I totally anticipate that. He anticipates it. But you just prep him with the basics. He’s got a good team around, this will still be about the team. The guys have been doing a good job all the way through. When we talk about Sam leading the team in these preseason games, there were ten other guys out there who really did a nice job, too.”
Being a better quarterback and accomplishing more than Flacco and Sanchez isn’t Bradford’s focus, but he does have the support of his teammates and the coaching staff and only time will tell if he ready to lead the Rams on the right path, starting with some wins.
“I think it is nice to have it out of the way going into Week 1 knowing that I am going to start versus Arizona next week,” said Bradford on Saturday after he learned that he will be the starter on opening day. “I think it probably gives everyone else a little bit of sense of security knowing who’s going to be back there…“Definitely. I’m a competitor. I sat the bench last year with an injury and it’s something that I did not enjoy at all. Just to have the opportunity to play football again, it’s really something that I look forward to. I understand that I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me and there are still a lot of things that I can improve on, but I feel very confident that I have the ability to help this team win football games.”
