Tom Cable’s days as head coach of the Oakland Raiders may be numbered.
Steve Corkran of the San Jose Mercury News reports that Raiders managing general partner Al Davis is “inclined” to fire Cable and bring in a new coach in the offseason.
If Cable is dismissed, the new coach will become the sixth man to hold the job since Jon Gruden left the team following the 2001 season.
Still, the current coach is expecting to return to the bay area team in 2010.
“I am, because I see, and you all see, too, where this team is going, and what we’ve been able to accomplish in proving some things,” Cable said when asked if he expected to remain with the Raiders next season. “Where we are offensively since the Cincinnati game speaks volumes, but, again, yeah, I’m pretty sure. As sure as I can be.”
The Raiders finished the season at 5-11 after losing to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Should the Raiders pull the trigger on Cable, he would become the latest coach in the NFL to be dismissed this offseason. The Washington Redskins fired Jim Zorn after the team’s worst season in 15 years.

as long as Davis has control of the steering wheel, no coach will want to come to Oakland and be a puppet. AL, let go!!! hire a GM that will do the work so we don’t mess up another draft year.. and lets try to go at least 8-8!!!
