While Tom Cable has not yet been fired by the Oakland Raiders, there is some speculation that Steve Mariucci could be his replacement.
There are rumblings that Mariucci has been getting word out that he is considering a return to coaching. If he does, he could be the man in black (and silver) according to Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune.
Granted, the hire is a long shot, but Raiders owner Al Davis has spoken well of the former 49ers coach in the past. Mariucci also thinks highly of Davis.
Earlier in the week Mariucci’s name surfaced as a candidate for the USC head-coaching job after Pete Carroll headed to the Seattle Seahawks. Lane Kiffin landed the job instead.
But with Davis’ propensity toward offensive minded coaches, “Mooch” could be a good fit.
It’s all contingent on two things.
Whether or not Davis eventually fires Cable and whether the somewhat stingy owner is willing to pay the man.
