Unlike Vince Wilfork with the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints will not place their franchise tag on safety Darren Sharper.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Sharper will instead become a free agent just weeks after helping guide the team to their first Super Bowl victory.

The Saints might be hoping that Sharper will test the free agent waters, but eventually wind up signing back with them if they can match an offer he gets elsewhere according to Mike Florio at PFT.

If the team decided to place the tag on him it would have cost them $6.455 million. It is uncertain that he will receive that type of pay check in the open market.
