The Washington Redskins will be required to re-interview secondary coach Jerry Gray and defensive coordinator Greg Blache for the head coaching position to satisfy the league’s Rooney Rule after Jim Zorn is fired according to a report by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
The NFL has seemingly flip flopped its status as to whether the Redskins have been in compliance with rule since reports initially surfaced that candidate interviews had already begun.
Initially the NFL stated that a team cannot be in compliance with the Rooney Rule if there is not a vacancy to be had.
Then, last Sunday, NBC’s Andrea Kremer reported that the team received word that they were in the clear after conferring with the league.
Now, Mortensen’s report brings Kremer’s report into question.
Still, this is just a minor bump in the road before the team can officially hire Mike Shanahan as their next head coach.
UPDATE: ESPN is now clarifying the report saying that a re-interview is not guaranteed and that they only might have to speak to Gray again.
