Report: Giants and Raiders Are Interested in Matt Leinart

Matt Leinart

Matt Leinart may be headed to New York or Oakland

The Arizona Cardinals have nibbles from at least two teams who are interested in trading for Matt Leinart.

The Oakland Raiders and New York Giants have expressed interest in acquiring the former USC quarterback according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Buffalo Bills, who were also initially mentioned among the teams in the running for Leinart, are now steadfast in their denial that they want him.

Buffalo was interested in the Heisman Trophy winner during the offseason, but apparently are content to stick with their current quarterback situation.

From a practical standpoint, the New York Giants make the most sense for Leinart. With Eli Manning’s backup, Jim Sorgi, on IR the need is certainly there. Tom Coughlin may not be comfortable with Rhett Bomar as his No. 2 guy this season.

The Oakland Raiders, meanwhile, seem pretty set with their quarterback situation. Jason Campbell will start, Bruce Gradkowski will back up and Kyle Boller will fill the emergency role.

All three are quality quarterbacks which doesn’t leave a lot of room for a Leinart return to California.

Of course there is also the chance that an unknown team will walk away the winner in the Leinart sweepstakes.
