Redskins Sign Two, Pick Up Steam in Free Agency

The Washington Redskins have hardly made the big splash in free agent signings that many expected.

Until Wednesday afternoon the team only signed offensive guard Artis Hicks from the free agent pool.

Now, the Redskins appear to be picking up steam with two signings in the last 24 hours.

Late Wednesday the team announced they signed free agent nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu.

The big 31-year-old defensive lineman is listed at 6-foot-5 and 345 pounds and certainly fill some holes. He missed last all of the 2009 season after tearing his Achilles’s tendon on the first day of training camp with the Carolina Panthers.

His contract is believed to be for two-years and $7 million and is heavy on incentives.

Then, on Thursday the Redskins signed free agent tight end Sean Ryan who had a career year with the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He is primarily a blocking tight end, but did catch 14 passes and two touchdowns last season.

Speculation that he will replace Chris Cooley is unfounded. Cooley is expected to remain the team’s No. 1 tight end.

The same certainty cannot be said for backup tight end Todd Yoder who now could find himself on the outside looking in with the team. Among Redskins media, Yoder’s job is believed to be in jeopardy.
