Patriots, QB Tom Brady Negotiating Contract Extension

Tom Brady and the Patriots are currently negotiating a contract extension.

The Patriots are locked in serious negotiations with their star QB Tom Brady, hoping to iron out an extension with the 33-year-old in the next few days.

Earlier today, the Boston Herald reported that the Patriots offered Brady a 3-year extension worth $58 million. Meanwhile, ESPN‘s Adam Schefter tapped two source saying the Herald‘s report were “wrong” and “inaccurate”.

No word confirming the deal has come from either Brady’s people or within the organization. Coach Bill Belichick said, as per usual, he doesn’t have “anything to report on any contracts.” If the details are true, Brady’s $19.3 million payout will take him above Peyton Manning as the richest QB in the NFL.

Brady, who is currently entering the final year of his contract, has been adamant about re-signing with the team instead of entering free agency at the end of the season. The Patriots have hit some roadblocks trying to negotiate terms with the 3-time Super Bowl MVP, mostly tied to the impending labor uncertainties surrounding the 2011 season. However, the two sides have both stated a desire to get a deal done before the start of the season and it’s looking like that may come to fruition.

“Certainly, that’s everybody’s goal. That’s Troy Brown’s goal. That’s Tedy Bruschi’s goal. A lot of people have that,” Brady said of ending his career in New England. “At the same time, I know that I’m playing this year, hopefully . . . it’s still my responsibility to come out and earn a job and do the best that I can do.”

Brady was named the Comeback Player of the Year last season, passing for 4,398 yards and 28 touchdowns only a year after tearing his ACL in the first week of the 2008 season. During his 11 seasons with the Patriots, Brady has been named to 5 Pro Bowls, 2 All-Pro teams, and was named the NFL MVP in 2007 after he guided the team to a perfect 16-0 regular season.
