The Carolina Panthers took another hit to their already thin receiving corps Tuesday when they placed Wallace Wright on injured reserve with a shoulder injury that will require surgery.
Wright was expected to be a key player for the Panthers at receiver and in return situations, but suffered the injury last Friday night in a preseason win against Tennessee.
Wright signed as a free agent back in March after spending his first four seasons with the New York Jets.
“He’s worked very hard this offseason and was having a tremendous camp,” Coach John Fox of Carolina said. ” He’ll require surgery on his shoulder; that’s why he hit the IR list. Of course we’re disappointed, and so is he.”
Fox said Wright had really started to get acclimated with the Panthers playbook and was making strides on special teams.
“He was a guy that we were counting on pretty heavily, both at the receiver position and in the kicking game,” Fox added.
The Panthers also placed defensive lineman Hilee Taylor on IR because of a knee injury.
Taylor was a reserve defensive end that was expected to provide some depth on the line. He has played sporadically in his two seasons without making much of an impact.
Carolina also moved linebacker Thomas Davis to the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after surgery on his right knee earlier this summer.
The team cut Oliver Young and Dexter Jackson to get down to the 75-player limit.
