One day after losing the AFC Championship the New York Jets announced that five of their coaches would not be returning in 2010.
Assistant quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, special teams coach Kevin O’Dea and defensive quality control coach Brian Smith all had their contracts expire after the season and will not be re-signed.
Assistant defensive backs coach Doug Plank was informed that his services were no longer needed and was let go.
And lastly, pass-rushing consultant Chuck Smith departed the team to become the new defensive line coach at the University of Tennessee.
“(Some contracts) ran out, and some contracts will not be extended, and that’s unfortunate because some guys did a great job,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “I’d really rather not get into the particulars of things right now.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Jets owner Woody Johnson felt that the team had too many coaches and that they will not replace any of the departures.
These guys exceeded ALL-and I mean ALL-exoectations. How much could it have cost, % of total budget, to keep them? The owner is making a Scrooge-on-Christmas-Eve decision.
