The NFL acknowledged that it does not have exclusive copyright ownership of the popular New Orleans Saints football rallying cry “who dat”, Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell said on Monday.
After spending the afternoon on a conference call with the league, Caldwell said the NFL was misunderstood and that the real issue was that it did not want consumers to be confused or misled into thinking that merchandise they were purchasing was officially licensed by the NFL.
“This one just got a little out of hand,” he said, noting that the NFL has abandoned its claims of copyright infringement. “We appear to be in perfect agreement.”
The bottom line, according to Caldwell, is anyone can print “who dat” and use the fleur-de-lis as they see fit so long as they don’t market products as officially licensed NFL items.
“They can scratch it on the hood of their car if they want,” Caldwell said.
