New Orleans Schools May Cancel Class After Super Bowl

Many school systems in the New Orleans area are considering canceling class the day after the Super Bowl.

The Monday following the NFC Championship, many young Saints fans skipped school, likely due to excessive celebration.

Jefferson Parish public schools had 8,800 absences on that day, compared to 3,500 on a typical school day. To put that into perspective, the system has 44,000 students, meaning 20 percent of students were out.

“We feel that it is not in the best interest of our students to be required to attend school on a day when a significant number of absences or tardiness will be the reality, and when learning will not be optimal,” school spokeswoman Lisa Sibal said, per the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The school system would use one of their allotted emergency days should they decide to cancel class.
