Out with the old – in with the new. The Detroit Lions have cut four players from their roster today, in preparation of next week’s draft.
Safety Kalvin Person, offensive guard Daniel Loper, and cornerbacks Kevin Hobbs and Brian Witherspoon all got the boot on Friday.
Detroit is still searching for a starting safety to play alongside Louis Delmas. It is possible that Daniel Bullocks – who is returning from knee surgery, having missed the 2009 season – could step into the starting role. And the Lions are expected to add a rookie to the mix through the draft.
The Lions drafted Bullocks in the second round in 2006. He played 15 games for them as a rookie, starting seven before suffering a torn ACL in the 2007 exhibition season. He started 15 games in 2008, but the knee injury forced him to miss his second season in three years.
Pearson, 31, a seven-year veteran arrived in Detroit in 2008. He started 10 games in 2008 and had 12 appearances last season. His Lions tenure ended with zero interceptions.

Detroit has seven picks in the draft which begins next Thursday – one in the first four rounds and three in the seventh – and will be looking to fill holes at defensive tackle, cornerback, safety, while adding a running back, with Kevin Smith returning from a torn ACL.
