Leftwich Suffers MCL Damage, Dixon Likely to Start Week 1

Byron Leftwich

Byron Leftwich reportedly tore his MCL in Thursday's preseason finale

When Ben Roethlisberger serves his suspension at the beginning of the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be turning to Dennis Dixon to quarterback the team.

Byron Leftwich, Roethlisberger’s projected backup, reportedly tore his MCL in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers.

For any NFL player, let alone one who likely would have been a starter in Week 1, suffering an injury in the final preseason game is bad news. Suffering an injury of that magnitude is a nightmare.

Pro Player Solutions, who represent Letwich, posted news that the Steelers quarterback suffered a tear on Twitter.

However, the team isn’t confirming the tear and is instead claiming he sprained his knee, but will undergo an MRI.

While the degree of damage isn’t specifically know, a source told PFT’s Mike Florio that the injury “seems to be serious.”
