Last Preseason Game Matters For Colts Fringe Players

For the Colts starters, the finale is the least important pre-season game. They won’t even play a single down. For fringe players, it might one of the more important games of their careers, and certainly is the most important one this year.

“[I've] got a lot riding this week,” cornerback Ray Fisher said.

Fisher is competing with Devin Moore and Brandon Thomas to be the Colts main kick-off and punt returner.

Devin Moore already knows what it is like to be on the outside of the final 53. The Wyoming product was orginally signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009, but was cut from their practice squad last September. The diminutive running back is considered by some to be the front runner for the return position with an average gain of 32.3 yards on kick-off returns, but Fisher and Thomas are in pursuit.

Before the last pre-season game Fisher said, “It’s all about do or die. Hopefully make a couple of plays so I can make the 53-man roster.”

Head coach Jim Caldwell understands how much this last game means to some of his players.

“We have another round for guys to have an opportunity to take a look,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. “Devin Moore will be back there again. We may have an opportunity to sprinkle Brandon James in a little bit more as well. There will be a few guys who will get a look, but obviously, this is the final one.”
