Johnson eager to start Saturday for Bucs

Josh Johnson will start for the Bucs Saturday night against the Jaguars

The other Josh will get his turn Saturday night against Jacksonville.

Because of an injury to starter Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay will turn to Josh Johnson to start in the team’s third preseason game against Jacksonville.

Johnson played well in last week’s win against Kansas City, but he’s still raw and trying to find his way.

Johnson completed 6 of 10 passes against the Chiefs for 133 yards and one touchdown–a 53 yard pass to Michael Spurlock. It was an encouraging sign coming off a less-than-stellar performance in Week 1 of the preseason against Miami, when had two turnovers.

Johnson also started four games last season, winning none. Rudy Carpenter, who has yet to see a regular season snap for any NFL team, is the next option at quarterback. For now, though, the job is Johnson’s. Freeman should be ready for the season-opener September 12 after breaking the tip of right thumb last week against the Chiefs.

“Now it’s even more critical that every time something like this may happen, to be more ready to go out and help the team,” Johnson said. “That’s what it’s all about.”
