The Jets and coach Rex Ryan are downplaying a hip injury sustained by CB Antonio Cromartie that caused him to missed some time at practice on Tuesday.
The injury appears to be a flare-up of the broken hip Cromartie played through the entire 2008 season. While the lingering pain is a cause for concern, Ryan told the New York Post he’s not worried as the injury is just “a little hip thing”. Cromartie hip also forced him out of Jets minicamp back in June, but the former 19th overall pick insisted his hip was “fatigued” not injured.
Cromartie stint with the Jets has been stellar so far this summer, with Ryan heralding the 26-year-old as “pretty amazing” and a “phenomenal athlete” following the team’s preseason opener. He’s slated to start at left cornerback this season and will be the no. 1 defensive back on the depth chart so long as Darelle Revis continues to hold out.
Cromartie spent 3 seasons with San Diego, making the Pro Bowl in 2007 after recording 10 INTs that season. The two sides grew estranged near the end of last season, resulting in the Chargers trading Cromartie to the Jets in March.
