WR Laveraneus Coles was among the list of players cut on Sunday when the team trimmed their roster down to 75 players.
Coles, who was drafted by the Jets in 2000 and spent 7 of his 10 seasons with the team, planned his third stint with the team to be his last.”Once the buck stops here, I’m done,” he said. “I started here and it’s going to end here for me.” Now that he won’t make the Week 1 roster, the 32-year-old may consider retirement, ESPN.com reports.
Many speculated that Coles was originally brought in as an early season quick-fix for the Jets receiving corp who will be without WR Santonio Holmes for the first four games due to a league suspension.
“I could be the guy where it’s, ‘Break glass in case of emergency,’ ” Coles said last week.
Naming Coles, who’s only posted 4 receptions for 19 yards in the preseason, to the official roster would mean the Jets would have to pay him out the $855,000 in guarenteed money he is due in 2010. Instead the team can re-sign him Week 1 and pay him on a game-by-game basis if needed. While there is no indication that would happen, coach Rex Ryan told the New York Daily News that it’s a “definite possibility”
Coles, who has also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins, has logged 674 receptions, 8,609 yards and 49 touchdowns in his career. Other notable cuts on Sunday include DE Rodrique Wright and WRs Marcus Henry and Aundre Allison.
