Jets and Revis Could Have Agreement Before Week 1

Darrelle Revis

AOL's Fanhouse is reporting the Jets and Darelle Revis could agree to terms before the team's Sept. 13 opener vs. Baltimore.

It’s looking likely that the Jets and CB could agree to terms before the team’s Sept, 13 opener vs. Baltimore, according to a new report.

A source told AOL’s Fanhouse that Revis and the Jets have been quietly negotiating terms while the 25-year-old corner has been training separately in Pittsburgh. The details of the contract are still hazy, but it’s believed the deal will be a record-breaker “in order to reflect Revis’ belief, and the team’s corresponding assertions, that he is the league’s best cornerback.”

“There are a lot of different possibilities still in play,” the source told Fanhouse of the deal’s structure.

Although this is promising news for Jets fans, the same source behind this report claimed the two sides had a deal in place last week that never came to fruition.

Coming off a 2009 season where he was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Year, Revis has missed all of Jets’ training camp and the entire preseason looking for his payday. Conflicting reports in the past weeks range from having the two sides near “an imminent agreement” to SI‘s Jay Glazer reporting that the Jets’ “don’t even know” where their star cornerback is physically.

Between Revis’ absence and LB Calvin Pace (broken foot) set to miss 4-6 weeks, the Jets’ defense is looking less fearsome than first anticipated. Coach Rex Ryan still steadfastly believes the team will produce regardless.

“We can get it done,” Ryan said. “We’ve proved it all through the years. That’s all I know is great defenses. That’s what we stand for. It’s not about one guy or two guys. Every team is going to go through one or two guys you’re going to miss.”

Ryan added that the experience similar injury problems last year and learned to play better “team defense”, a skill that will aid them further in the 2010 campaign.

“[This] happened last year,” he said. “When we opened the season, we never had Calvin and we never had Shaun Ellis. Last year, we lost [Kris] Jenkins for a lot of it. This is what we do. We’re a team defense. That’s why I know our defense will play great. There’s not a question in my mind that we’ll play great.”
