Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray wants to be the team’s next head coach.
It was revealed that he already interviewed for the position in December, which drew criticism from some media outlets, because it was a way for the Redskins to “get around” the NFL’s Rooney Rule.
Even with Daniel Snyder being the owner and even with Mike Shanahan widely thought to be the head coach in waiting, Gray still wants the job.
“Well, if it’s open and they called me, of course, I do,” Gray said per Dan Steinberg and the D.C. Sports Blog. “I’d be a fool to say [I'm not interested in] one of the best jobs in the country–traditional team, you’ve got a lot of passion. But there’s gonna be some things that has to change, and I think changing is to get those guys to understand really what the Redskins are about.”
The team is expected to fire current coach Jim Zorn by Monday afternoon.
