In Need Of Talent And Depth, Lions Move Rookie Spievey To Safety

Louis Delmas

It may take a few auditions to find a player to pair with safety Louis Delmas

The musical chairs at safety continue for the Detroit Lions as C.C. Brown, who was playing with the No. 1 defense, sat out of practice today with a cast on his hand.

With the inconsistency of Louis Delmas’ health, due to a nagging hamstring injury, and the injury to Brown, the Lions had no choice but to make a move.

Undrafted rookie safety Randy Phillips continues to get looks at the starting spot next to Delmas. However, he isn’t the only rookie making a push for the starting job.

Because of the number of bodies at cornerback, the Lions have moved rookie third-round pick Amari Spievey to safety. Chris Houston, Jonathan Wade, and Dre Bly are expected to be the top three heading into the regular season, leaving little playing time for Spievey.

His aggressive, instinctive play fits the mold of safety, lacking the ideal speed of a starting cornerback in the NFL.

It’s unknown how long Brown will be sidelined, however it makes the release of veteran safety Marvin White last week look even more questionable, with injuries to the veterans and with inexperienced rookies as the only other options.
