Jon Gruden believes the Raiders can capture the AFC West title

Former Oakland Raiders head coach and current ESPN Monday Night Football commentator Jon Gruden thinks 2010 could be a big year for the Silver and Black. In fact, he believes the team could be contenders to capture the AFC West.

He gushed over nearly every aspect of the Al Davis owned franchise during a conference call with Bay Area media Wednesday afternoon.

“The Raiders should be excited,” Gruden said, per Cam Inman of the Contra Costa Times. “I don’t just say this being former a Raider myself, but I do like their defense… Adding guys like (Kamerion) Wimbley, (John) Henderson, trading for Richard Seymour, (having) Tommy Kelly, getting (Richard) McClain in the first round. That’s a good front seven. (Nnamdi Asomugha is) arguably one of the top corners in all of football. I like everything about their defense.”

Gruden also praised Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski, but saved the biggest compliments for the kicking game. Yes, the kicking game.

“They have maybe the best punter in history,” he said. “And I’m not kidding you. His statistics make Ray Guy look normal. Shane Lechler is an equalizer. Janikowksi can put points on the board.”

As for his outlook on the 2010 season…

“I think they can win the division. I really do. I like the Raiders a lot.”
