Second-year running back Mike Goodson saw that his opportunity to flourish with the Carolina Panthers might not be as a running back.
With 1,000-yard rushers DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart firmly entrenched ahead of him on the depth chart, Goodson has tried his hand at returning kickoffs.
In Friday night’s preseason win against the Tennessee Titans, it was Goodson’s 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that helped spark the Panthers to the win.
Coach John Fox of Carolina has certainly liked what he has seen from Goodson during the preseason, which has helped to stabilize the Panthers special teams.
“He worked very hard this offseason,” Fox said. ”A second-year player typically does make a pretty good jump. He put a lot of time in the weight room, conditioning and his playbook, so I think he’s playing faster. He’s always had good natural speed but now he’s playing faster, and I think you were able to see that the other night.”
Goodson, for his part, just wants to help the team in any way he can.
“It’s my chance to touch the ball and contribute to the team,” Goodson said in an interview with The Charlotte Observer. “So I’ve got to make the best out of what I get.”
