Giants Release LB Antonio Pierce

The New York Giants have released 9-year veteran Antonio Pierce, according to an ESPN.com report.

The aging veteran was admittedly ‘shocked’ at first, but seemed to understand the team’s reasons behind the decision.

“They said it wasn’t my health, or the way I played, but just that — that they were going in another direction. We left everything smooth and peaceful and I’m happy about that. I felt like I said everything I needed to say to them. I’ve loved my time in New York and won’t have anything but good feelings about being with this team.”

Pierce signed with the Giants in 2005 after spending his first 5 seasons in the league as a Washington Redskin. In his 5 seasons with the Giants, Pierce led the team in tackles 3 times, was a 3-year captain, and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2006.

Pierce was asked if he had any preference about where he might play next year. “I have no wish list. If I had a preference, it would be to stay in the NFC East, since I know the division so well. But I just want to go somewhere I can help a good team.”

Look for Pierce to make an impact in Philly, Dallas, or possibly a return to the District.
