Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre confirmed that he underwent a procedure on his ankle recently.

The 40-year-old future Hall of Fame quarterback posted a brief statement on his official website Friday evening confirming rumors that surfaced earlier in the day regarding the procedure.

“This is to confirm that I did have a procedure to remove some scar tissue and bone spurs from my ankle which had been bothering me for a period of time,” Favre wrote. “I appreciate your concerns.”

His statement also confirms that it was a “minor procedure” as was widely believed to be the case.

Meanwhile, Favre still has not given the Vikings a decision on whether or not he will play next season.

The nature of the operation does raise questions about it being necessary for him to play in 2010. If it was truly a necessity, the stage is clear for him to return to the football field if he chooses.

The best bet is that he won’t make up his mind until training camp.
