With Aqib Talib serving a one-game suspension to open the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, E.J. Biggers will start in the Buccaneers season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Biggers impressed in the preseason, and head coach Raheem Morris is looking forward to seeing how he responds to the challenge.
“Aqib is missed, there’s no doubt about that,” said Morris. “He’s one of those character guys around here… and he provides the fun that you miss about him, and you miss him this week, and he’ll be missed all this week. But the guys have stepped up behind him. E.J has jumped right into that role and he’s been ready to go, and he’s got to go out there and perform.
“It’s a great opportunity for a young man on our football team. And I’m fired-up to go see him play.”
Biggers was a seventh-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in the 2009 draft out of Western Michigan, and missed practically all of his rookie season with a shoulder injury.
He sparkled in the first preseason game against the Dolphins, recording four solo tackles and recovering a fumble.
Talib will return to the team when they travel to Carolina to face the Panthers in Week 2.
