The Dolphins will start CB Jason Allen over Sean Smith in tonight’s game vs. Atlanta, a warning to the 2nd-year pro that his starting job may be at jeopardy.
According to the Miami Herald, Smith, who has struggled throughout the preseason, has been on notice all training camp that his spot is at stake. “Count this another strongly worded message that [Smith] needs to pull up and play better or he’ll find himself coming off the bench when the season begins,” wrote Dolphins beat writer Armando Salguero.
Smith started all 16 games in his rookie season last year, recording 39 tackles, but publicly vented frustrations about not tallying a interception. He and fellow 2nd-year corner Vontae Davis told reporters earlier this week that they’ve worked hard throughout training camp to assert themselves as a feared cover duo in the NFL.
Miami plans to play Davis and Allen, who the team drafted 16th overall in 2006,
the entire first half tonight. They’ll face a formidable opponent in Falcons QB Matt Ryan, the best passer they’ve seen by far this preseason.
