Dolphins Sign Pro Bowl KR Clifton Smith

Clifton Smith

The Dolphins signed KR/RB Clifton Smith on Wednesday.

The Dolphins added KR/RB Clifton Smith to their 53-man roster on Wednesday, making him the likely choice to return kickoffs and punts for the team in 2010.

Smith has spent the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joining them as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season after returning a kickoff 97 yards in Week 9 and a punt 70 yards in Week 12. He was also given All-NFC honors at punt returner and was named to the AP’s All-Pro second-team.

The Fresno State alum was placed on the Tampa Bay’s injured reserve list in December 2009 after suffering two concussions that season, only appearing in 11 games. The Bucs eventually waived Smith on Sunday.

In 2005, Smith set an NCAA record against Weber State with three punt returns for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

The Dolphins also waived OL Joe Reitz on Wednesday. The two moves mark the first official transactions made by the Dolphins’ since GM Jeff Ireland took over a majority of player personnel duties from Bill Parcells on Tuesday.
