According to Sal Interdonato of the Times Herald-Record and Detroit Lions team Spokesman Matt Barnhart ,U.S. Army 1st Lt. Caleb Campbell has signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions.
Campbell was originally a seventh round pick of the Lions in 2008 as a safety. In 2008 the Army originally allowed Campbell to delay entry into the Army, but in July 2008 the Army revised its alternative service option policy and called him back to duty.
Detroit offered the 2008 West Point graduate a contract last month after a workout. That opportunity provided Campbell with grounds to apply to the Department of Defense for an early release from his five year, active duty commitment.
The Department of Defense granted the release on condition he serve six years in the reserves and he can be involuntarily recalled to full time service for any reason.
Campbell will take part in the rookie and free agent minicamp throughout the weekend with Ndamukong Suh, Jahvid Best and the rest of the Detroit Lions draft class and undrafted signees.
Campbell, who was a safety coming out in 2008, is 6’2″ and 237lbs and now projects as a linebacker at the NFL level. Detroit has seven linebackers on the roster, led by Julian Peterson.
