Having to give interviews, controlling grown men, and being second guessed at every opportunity are things that all NFL coaches must endure. Texans Gary Kubiak said that none of those things is the most difficult aspect of his job. The toughest thing for Kubiak is making the final roster cut before the season starts.
“The hardest thing is talking to 80 players the night before camp begins, telling them what it’ll take for them to make the team, then having to cut so many to get down to 53,” Kubiak said.
Kubiak and Houston’s general manager Rick Smith will have to make key decisions about such things as how many receivers to keep on the active roster. They’ll have to decided whether the Texans should carry three quarterbacks, like many teams, or just two and keep the extra spot for another position. The number of running backs they will retain ( the team currently has seven) and which defensive backs are absolutely essential will need to be determined.
The most difficult, and possibly the most important choice will be at the kicker position. Long-time Houston kicker Kris Brown and free agent aquisition Neil Rackers are tied in their competition and the choice will be difficult.
“It’s a miserable day, but it’s part of the business,” Kubiak said. “It’s no fun making those decisions. There’s no tougher decision that I have to make.
“It’s a tougher day for them. I mean, guys work their tails off for you, and then you tell them you’re letting them go. Some don’t know where they’re going or what they’re going to do.”
