Cowboys Won’t Place Franchise Tag on Miles Austin

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t planning on using their franchise tag on wide receiver Miles Austin and there isn’t a guarantee that the team will lock him into a long-term deal, either.

If the team were to use their tag on the breakout receiver it would cost them $9.52 million for the 2010 season.

“We don’t need to use the franchise tag,” Team vice president Stephen Jones told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Wednesday.

Maybe the Cowboys know something we don’t. Owner Jerry Jones is confident that Austin will be back next season.

“We’re just not going to have Miles Austin any place but with the Dallas Cowboys,” he said during a radio interview on Tuesday.

Mike Florio of PFT isn’t quite so confident.

His scenario for keeping Austin in Dallas is simple. Either place the franchise tag on him or sign him to a long-term deal. Nothing else will do.
