It’s a done deal in Washington and Mike Shanahan will be the head coach of the Redskins for the next five seasons.
But Shanahan won’t only serve as the team’s coach. He will also serve as the team’s executive Vice President of Football Operations—a title most recently held by Vinny Cerrato.
As the VP, Shanahan will have “ultimate authority” on football decisions with the club according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Our own Joey Sandy previously reported, per the Denver Post, that the new coach will earn roughly $7 million per season. There had been previous speculation that the deal could be worth as much as $10 million annually.
The Redskins began their latest round of talks with Shanahan the day after Bruce Allen was hired as the team’s G.M. in December and intensified Monday morning after Jim Zorn was fired.
He was the only candidate that they really interviewed.
Current Houston Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, Mike’s son, will join the franchise in the same role he is leaving behind.
A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Redskins Park in Ashburn, VA, just outside the nation’s capital, to make the official announcement.
