Colts safety Melvin Bullitt was fined $5,000 for a hit on Mark Sanchez, Jets QB, during the AFC Championship game last Sunday.
NFL VP of Officiating, Mike Pereira, said that the hit should’ve drawn a flag during the game, but it did not. The Jets’ head coach, Rex Ryan, was angry on the sidelines and almost got himself an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty because of the way he reacted.
The play in question was a handoff from Sanchez to running back Thomas Jones, but Bullitt thought it was a fake and Sanchez still had the ball. When asked, he said, “Five thousand dollars, that hurts. I understand [Ryan] being mad because that’s his quarterback, but I didn’t try to hurt him. I was just playing football. I didn’t know if he had the ball or not. I was coming from behind.”
Bullitt will play in the Super Bowl game against the New Orleans Saints next week.
